Coronavirus Cybersecurity Tips for Working from Home

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to surge across America, a large portion of the workforce is being asked to work from home for their own protection as well as for the protection of others.

While working from home alleviates the dangers associated with social mingling, it does present some new cybersecurity challenges to companies and employees. To keep everyone safe and secure, following are eight practical tips when working from home during the COVID-19 outbreak.

  1. Create a cybersecurity policy and action plan that provides the same multi-layer security protocols on laptops and other remote devices that your I.T. department currently deploys on facilities-based desktops and equipment.
  2. For work-at-home employees, avoid public Wi-Fi. If unavoidable, set-up a mobile hotspot to prevent others on the Wi-Fi network from gaining access to your information.
  3. If possible, use a virtual private network to ensure maximum protection and a direct connection into the Company’s networked applications.
  4. Make sure all computers and devices that have access to corporate data have an up-to-date firewall.
  5. Deploy the most up-to-date encryption software services available on all remote desktop configurations.
  6. For maximum protection, consider remote network-level multifactor authentication before a connection is established.
  7. Match network access to employee need and confine access to an “as-needed” basis. Restricting full network access to all remote users significantly decreases the risk of unauthorized intrusion.
  8. Don’t improvise when it comes to collaboration tools. Use only company-endorsed and loaded tools. If an instant messaging application isn’t working correctly, do not download a substitute from the internet. It could introduce a program with a serious security flaw.
