It’s that time of year again! Time to clad the green and sample a good bottle of whiskey along with a few pints of Guinness in celebration of St. Patty’s Day.
However, the greater levels of alcohol consumption also make it a day to be responsible. While everyone loves a celebration, unfortunately, one night of drinking can lead to deadly consequences if plans aren’t made to get home safely. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), St. Patty’s Day is one of the deadliest days on our nation’s roads. 272 lives were lost in drunk-driving crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period (6:00 p.m. March 16 to 5:59 a.m. March 18) between 2017 and 2021. To help you navigate the St. Patty’s Day festivities this Sunday (March 17), Security Specialists urges you to use your head and party responsibly by remembering the following safety and security tips:
- Before you head out for the St. Patty’s celebration, plan a safe way to get home and, if your group is planning to drive, name a designated driver.
- Drink plenty of water and make sure you eat something (drinking on an empty stomach is extremely dangerous).
- Never leave your drink unattended.
- Use the buddy system to ensure everyone gets home safely – don’t let drunk friends get behind the wheel.
- Don’t become a target – only bring what you need (i.e. wallet, purse, ID, cellphone, etc.).
- For heaven’s sake, remember to have everyone wear a seatbelt.
- Be aware of your surroundings and watch out for others who may be intoxicated.
- If you’re hosting a party at home, collect your guests’ keys.
- To repeat – Don’t drink and drive; plan to use a designated driver or public transportation if you’re drinking.
