Roll Back the Clock for Security! Five Daylight Saving End Safety Tips from Security Specialists

Daylight saving time is, once again, coming to an end this Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024. That means most Americans will set their clocks to roll back an hour, technically at 2 a.m. (unless they update automatically). The switch to standard time means we’ll have an hour less daylight at the end of the day and an hour more in the morning. Sunrise on Nov. 3 is at 6:28 a.m. in Stamford, CT and sunset is 4:47 p.m.  The switch to standard time means we’ll have an hour less daylight at the end of the day and an hour more in the morning. As an example, sunrise in Stamford, CT will be at 7:27 a.m  on November 2 and sunset will be at 5:48 p.m.

Days will continue to get shorter until Dec. 21 when the winter solstice arrives. In addition to gaining an extra hour of sleep by setting clocks back an hour, the end of Daylight Saving Time provides a great opportunity to update the safety and security conditions around your home, including:

  1. Replacing all the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. You should also replace any smoke detector that is older than ten years and any CO detectors that are older than five
  2. Checking and recharging your fire extinguishers
  3. Avoiding using portable and fixed space heaters, as heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fire deaths
  4. Checking electric cords for damage and not overloading electrical outlets or power strips
  5. Only using light bulbs that match the recommended wattage for each lamp
