Crime Avoidance Tips for Car and Home from Security Specialists

Crime avoidance should be top of mind for everyone during October. In 1982, Carl M. Loeb Jr., a prominent businessman, founded the National Crime Prevention Council (N.C.P.C.) to help folks practice crime avoidance and prevention. McGruff the bloodhound was created as the mascot of the council and would advise people to “To take a bite out of crime.” It was during the tenure of President Ronald Reagan in 1984 when it was decided that October would be observed as National Crime Prevention Month. To help you remember National Crime Prevention Month, here are ten crime avoidance safety and security tips to help you stay safe.

Crime Avoidance Safety Tips for Your Home…
  1. If you’re moving into a new home or apartment, don’t forget to change the locks if you own it or ask the manager to change them if you rent.
  2. Stop leaving notes on your door announcing when you will be home.
  3. Always double-check that you’ve locked all your home’s doors and windows when you leave for the night.
  4. If you arrive home and your door is open or things appear to be out of place, get out of the house immediately and call 911.
  5. Don’t allow strangers into your home, even if they are hurt or say they need help. Keep the door locked and call the police for them.
Crime Avoidance Safety Tips for Your Car..
  1. Always travel and park in illuminated, brightly lit areas.
  2. If someone is standing near your parked car, don’t approach it. Wait for them to leave or get someone to escort you.
  3. Always be aware of your surroundings. After checking around your car, enter it quickly and lock the doors.
  4. Take notice of people just sitting in their cars or hanging out in parking lots.
  5. If another car bumps your automobile in traffic, don’t get out of the car. Use your mobile phone to call 911. Many times, carjackers use this technique so that they can overpower you and steal your car.
