Trick-or-Treat Security Tips for Halloween

The trick-or-treat holiday doesn’t have to have a scary ending for your children. While Halloween is a time of wonder and excitement, there is always the chance for children  to encounter risk while enjoying the festivities. With Halloween rapidly approaching, Security Specialists urges parents to follow these ten safety and security tips to ensure a happy trick-or-treat holiday:

  1. If at all possible, a responsible adult should accompany young children on trick-or-treat routes.
  2. Remind your child to never enter a stranger’s home or car.
  3. If your older children are going out alone, plan and review a route that’s agreed to before they leave.
  4. Establish an agreed-to time children should return home and remind them to walk not run across streets, always looking out for on-coming traffic.
  5. Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home.
  6. Always choose customs that are flame resistant.
  7. Make your child has a flashlight or glow stick to increase visibility at night. It’s also a good idea to fasten reflective tape to their customs and bags.
  8. Always check candy before your child eats it.
  9. Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends.
  10. For parents and adults who plan on being on the road during hours, make sure you watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.
