It’s National Nutrition Month – Tips to Stay Safe by Eating Healthy!

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates National Nutrition Month each year. National Nutrition Month was initiated in 1973 as National Nutrition Week, and it became a month-long observance in 1980 in response to growing interest in nutrition.

This year’s theme, “Celebrate a World of Flavors,” focuses on the unique, cultural variety of foods available to people from around the world and the role that dietitians play in helping clients create healthy habits while celebrating their cultural foods and heritage. At Security Specialists, we’ve put together some simple tips you can follow to make minor changes to your diet that can have a big impact on your health over time.

  1. Ditch the Candy and Cake, Eat Healthy Snacks – Grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy and protein can sustain your energy levels between meals while also satisfying your hunger.
  2. Load Up on Fruits and Vegetables – they are loaded with vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Try to make two cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables your daily goal.
  3. Drink More Water – Forget sugary drinks and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  4. Read the Label! – You are what you eat so pay attention to the nutrition label on all food and drink products so you can make smarter and safer dietary choices.
  5. For Safety’s Sake, Follow All Food Safety Guidelines – wash your hands regularly, handle raw food appropriately, cook foods to the proper internal temperature and refrigerate food promptly.
  6. Do Not Forget to Eat Breakfast! – It’s the most important meal of the day so make it count. Eat lean protein, whole grains, low-fat plain yogurt, fruits and vegetables.
  7. Don’t Over Do It, Watch Your Portion Size – Use a measuring cup to get the recommended serving size. Use half your plate for fruits and vegetables and the other half for grains and lean protein foods.
  8. Explore New Healthy Options from Around the World – To alleviate boredom, try new flavors and foods from around the world
