A new year…a new beginning…let the party begin! New Year’s Eve is upon us and with all the excitement of the holiday, it’s important to remember that there’s also the risk of having your celebration end in tragedy if you’re not careful. To help you and yours have a safe holiday, here are a few New Year’s Eve Safety Tips from Security Specialists:

  1. The most important New Year’s Eve Safety Tip to Remember? – Never, Ever Drink and Drive! If you’re going to drink – don’t drive. Remember, January 1st has the highest percentage of deaths related to alcohol, according to Insurance institute for highway safety data.
  2. If you intend on drinking during the holiday, have a designated driver or plan sober rides. Alcohol related accidents are highest between the hours of 9 PM an 3 AM, so please plan accordingly.
  3. If possible, avoid driving between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. on New Year’s Eve
  4. If you’re going to drink – eat. While it may seem obvious, if you’re going to drink make sure you have something in your stomach to avoid alcohol poisoning. Eat high-protein foods such as cheese, meat, and nuts to slow down the absorption of alcohol in the digestive system. This will give alcohol more time to metabolize in the body resulting in a lower risk of alcohol poising.
  5. Monitor your alcohol intake
  6. Do not serve minors alcohol
  7. Don’t go off the beaten path – when walking, use main roads. New Year’s Eve and day are among the deadliest days for pedestrians.
  8. Travel with groups
  9. Parents should always be aware of their children’s whereabouts
  10. Keep your phone charged so you are prepared in the event of an emergency
  11. Be careful what you share on social media on New Year’s Eve
  12. Try to avoid large crowds
