Don’t Be Left Out in the Cold and Snow – It May Be Warm Outside But Winter’s Not Over!

Don’t Get Left Out in the Cold and Snow by Underestimating the Power of a Snow Storm – Winter is Not Over!

While unusually mild weather has been present in many parts of the nation, it’s important to never underestimate the power of  cold temperatures and snow.

Snow storms can cause power shortages, treacherous roadways, and sub-zero temperatures, and if you’re not properly prepared, you may be caught in a dangerous situation. However, by employing some simple remedies and precautions, you can enjoy the coziness of the snow storm rather than worry about your safety.

Nine Tips to Stay Safe During a Snow Storm

  1. Before the Snow Comes Down, Prepare a Blizzard Survival Kit. Stock a bag with all the essentials that can help you outlast a long power outage including batteries, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, bottled water, canned goods, as well as any medications you take.
  2. Use Caution When Shoveling. Sometimes, there’s no other option but to shovel. However, shoveling is an easy way to throw out your back or get a heart attack. Remember to take constant breaks and stay hydrated. Shoveling is very physical work!
  3. Don’t Drink. Alcohol is dehydrating, which is less noticeable during the winter. Alcohol also interferes with the body’s internal thermometer, which can prevent shivering (not a good thing), and result in an accelerated loss of body heat.
  4. Keep Your Pets on a Leash When Outside.
  5. Charge Your Cellphone. If you’re stuck outside, it can be a life saver.
  6. Layer Up. Dress with three to four layers of clothing to insulate your body.
  7. Stay Inside. Staying off the roads is one of the best way to prevent winter hazards.
  8. Never Use a Generator Indoors. It’s a fire hazard as well as a potential carbon monoxide source.
  9. Use Flashlights Not Candles
